Kitchen Design Common Pitfalls, Part 1

Kitchens are often the heart of the home these days, used for eating, casual drinks with friends, socializing, as well as cooking. You want a kitchen that is both lovely to look at and functional. The first rule of kitchen design is “Thou Shalt Not Obstruct the Triangle.” The sink, stove and refrigerator make up the kitchen triangle (no relation to the Bermuda Triangle, but if you get in the way of a busy cook, you might be made to disappear!) This is the area of greatest concentrated activity in the kitchen. It requires planning in the layout to achieve unobstructed traffic flow and access. The sum of the all of the legs in your triangle should be between 10 feet and 25 feet. Smaller than 10ft and it becomes a galley kitchen with everyone tripping over each other. Larger than 25 feet, and you are going to get a workout!

The next big rule of kitchen design for a great space is “Thou Shalt Not Waste Space.” A huge mistake in planning is skimping on storage space. This is one of those things that it is far easier (and cheaper in the long run) to do right the first time than to fix it later. Kitchens are full of stuff. We use far more than dishes these days, and with a variety of cool and functional gadgets, most kitchens are jam packed. If your kitchen is small, think about having extra tall upper cabinets with molding above to give extra storage space. Full depth cabinetry over the refrigerator is another good use of space, as well as adding base cabinetry to the back of a seating area. Blind corner cabinets can be difficult, unless you have a trained professional guide you through the many options out there.
